It would be so much better if the book was about anybody else. The main characters are so boring.
I needed to sit on this one for a while because I wasn't sure how to feel. Sturmhond, Tolya and Tamar carried my interest for the majority of the book. I felt more connected to them than Alina, who still very much feels y/n. However, the constant dance between intimacy and severance (Alina & Mal versus Alina & the Darkling) was a good commentary on how ambition and power can change relationship dynamics and the self. Both Mal and the Darkling bring Alina's strong traits to the forefront and neither relationship can be considered incomprehensible. Buttt I still see the Darkling as a one dimensional villain. I understand his motives and goals, but they lack complexity imo. Nonetheless, the stakes are rising and the scope of politics is becoming global. I'm not sure I want to finish the series... but I want to watch the show, and I heard Six of Crows duology was so good.

Nothing particularly interesting happened, but I recognise that it is important for the development of the story and for the transition to the third and final book, and above all for the character development of the characters, especially Alina.
However, for the rest, it was extremely boring.

Liked this one better than the first! I really enjoy Nickolai’s introduction and we get more palace stuff here. Also, I find the Mal/Alina relationship more heart wrenching and powerful than it was. Definitely more moments in this one that I found emotionally powerful.
