“I've seen what you truly are," said the Darkling, "and I've never turned away. I never will. Can he say the same?”

Sequels are scary, especially when you really did like the first book in a series. The expectations are higher, there are certain things you know that need to happen and the chances of a second book failing you are just that much higher. But honestly, if anything, I enjoyed this one even more than the first.
First of all, there's clearly an improvement to the writing. While [b: Shadow and Bone|10194157|Shadow and Bone (The Grisha, #1)|Leigh Bardugo|https://d2arxad8u2l0g7.cloudfront.net/books/1339533695s/10194157.jpg|15093325] was good, I felt it lacked an atmospheric writing that helped set the tone to the dangerous and dark events that were happening. This was definitely not a problem in this one - from the very beggining the writing had an ominous tone to it that amped up the tension and had me biting my nails, waiting for the climax. And when the climax happenned... OH BOY! While there were not really many ~big plot twists~ like the first book and I kinda expected everything that happened, it was still very satisfying and it made me want to jump straight into the final book (which I did, and I'm now currently reading it and it's already AMAZING).
This is much more slower-paced than the first book, but I enjoyed it. The focus of Siege and Storm was in showing (not telling) Alina's character development as her powers and her responsabilities grew exponentially. I'm really attached to Alina and I'm fascinated by seeing the way she develops overall in the series; I LOVE that Bardugo isn't afraid of making her heroine someone who has a dark side, and who might embrace it (even without fully needing to, just because she wants to), instead of taking the easy route of making her "morally superior" and unfazed by the temptations of the dark
I loved all the new characters, too: Tolya and Tamar, the wondertwins, were particularly fascinating, but I wish Bardugo had explored the fact that they were Shu more, because I think it'd be an interesting way to develop worldbuilding further and introduce us to different cultures; and Nikolai, the true star of this book and officially my new boyfriend (#sorrynotsorry). I LOVE HIM SO MUCH????? Like I was honestly NOT expecting this - it's been a long time since I've fallen so hard for a fictional character. But he's so intelligent, and charming, and sarcastic, and handsome, and determined, I'm pretty much just making myself sad now by reminding myself of how much I love him lmao
Spoiler
I wasn't the biggest fan of the new love-geometry configuration tho... can Bardugo just take Mal out of the race and have Alina date both Nikolai and the Darkling in a happy poly relationship? No? Okay then...I did feel the lack of the Darkling in this, but it just made the few little moments he showed up that much more precious.
Oh, and as a final note, something I didn't like about this book: Mal. Mal is the reason I didn't give this five stars. Mal is the reason over half my notes about this book are "??????" because I honestly cannot understand what it is that Alina sees in him (other than his dazzling looks, but hey, there are TWO other dazzling beautiful guys who are also pretty interested in you and that aren't complete assholes!
God, it was good to get that out of my chest lol
ANYWAY, aside from that little inconvenience, this book was a true gem. I'm 20% into the third book and I can't wait to see how this series will end.

AHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!Why do you do this to me author?!?!? How is she going to get her power back....HOW?! It has to be the firebird it has to!!!! I want her to get the firebird, but at the same time I don't...I don't want her to be all power hungry...
Speaking of being power hungry...ALINA'S AND MAL'S RELATIONSHIP IS SO STICK'N COMPILCATED!!!!!!!! First off, Alina...you really need to talk to Mal about your feelings, secrets, and what you are going through. That's what you do when you are a couple. Or...just like what happen in the book, you guys drift apart. For example...the whole seeing the Darkling thing. WHY DIDN'T YOU TELL HIM SOONER!? She had so many chances! And to be honest you really chose the wrong time to tell him. And Mal...dearie...you really need to push her to tell you things so you can understand. I mean...you need to let her talk too. You can't just assume things. ALSO! You can't go get drunk and beat yourself up...and kiss stupid girls. You don't like Alina doing that, so why do you do it? I mean I get he was mad and maybe heartbroken, but Alina was trying to explain ( again Alina..bad timing!!!!) and you didn't let her. Anyway...what I am trying to say is TALK TO EACH OTHER!!!!!
That was the only thing that really bothered me...I wanted so bad to have them make up with each other...I was waiting for a Angry, sexy, I need you in my life type of kiss. And you sneaky author you...that Scene with the Darkling disguised as Mal...you really got me there. I was reading and getting so excited thinking,
In my head: oh Ho ho ho ho! This is it! This is the ulamite apology scene!!!! This is....WHAT THE DARKLING?!
Literally.
*Internal screaming*
Anyway...I'm hoping there is one in the next book...and I'm hoping Alina will not go power hungry and break everyone's heart...because that is one big problem she will have to fix. PLEASE AUTHOR GIVE ME THE SCENE!! I get all these steamy Darkling scenes...so can I get one with Mal please...please....😩🙏🏻
Over all I really enjoyed the book, with some bumps here and there. I made it. And I will get through it with Alina. YOU CAN DO IT GIRL!!!!

so this may be a controversial opinion but I am not a fan of leigh bardugo's writing. I find it very hard to get through and I get bored very easily.
In particular, this book was very tedious and it honestly felt like a chore to read. Not much happened throughout that was interesting, but right at the end there were a couple of pages that were evidently very important and had the most action out of the whole book, but I didn't even realise that until the book was over because it was over so quickly and so inadequately described and fleshed out that I didn't even notice it.
I also don't like any of the characters whatsoever, apart from Nikolai - who was the reason why I gave this book 4 stars. However, like with much of the plot and other characters, Nikolai didn't seem very original - I've read so many variations of him in other books, so I really feel like more could have been done to make him interesting.
so I will be reading the third one, mainly because I want to watch the Shadow and Bone tv show when it comes out, but I don't think I can guarantee that I will like it.
