1. I hate Mal. like... who let him live past book 1?
2. Nikolai is the only one that made me not dnf this book
3. That ending scene was godly!! Literally why is the last chapter the best.
This book definitely has middle book syndrome and i hope things get better in ruin and rising.

Like Shadow and Bone I wasn't blown away by this book. I found myself putting off reading it at times because I just wasn't interested and while the plot wasn't bad it also failed to pull me in.

Alina I like as a character however I still feel like there is nothing that stands out about her and I don't feel she is very memorable as a character. Mal I just couldn't care less about, he could disappear off the face of the planet and I wouldn't notice. i also don't care about the romance between them, I just don't believe the chemistry between then and for some reason and the normal romance drama you get in YA books is just annoying me even more than usual.

The Darkling continues to be a disappointment to me, I had such high hopes for him and from the way people talked about him I thought he was going end up a new favourite character however like Mal I don't really care for him.

Nikolai, on the other hand is the person who made this book for me. I loved him from the minute we were introduced and I lived for every time he was on the page. To be honest if it wasn't for his character I feel I might have given up on this book and I just hope we get lots more of him in Ruin and Rising.

Overall, I gave this 2.5 stars.

Loved this book. A great continuation of the story. Lots of twists and turns. Love the characters.

Politics, plotting & breaking my damn heart.

This was much slower than the first book, but it was needed to explain and plot/plan the war etc. I think the drama with will they/wont they romance kept it engaging & it was paced well so you weren’t trudging through masses of political chat.

I’m honestly clueless where we are going next. The betrayals in this were so unexpected and I was caught up looking one direction I didn’t consider what was coming from a different side!

The emotions of Alina are written so well it’s so stressful reading
