"I am broken
into clefts of screaming
that sound like the drilling flickers
in treacherous morning air
on murderous sidewalks
I am bent
forever
wiping up blood
that should be
You."

The Black Unicorn is one of my favorite collections by Audre Lorde. It’s brilliant, powerful, and brutally honest. There are a few themes throughout the collection. I enjoyed the poems about love, rage, and injustice.

Some pieces such as ’Power’ were tough to get through because it was inspired by true events. Although it was a challenge, I can’t appreciate it enough. I highly recommend this book if you like poetry or are looking for a new poet to explore!

Got this from a friend for Christmas and it did not disappoint! Such passion in Audre's words, definitely worth a read if you're into poetry of any kind.

Powerful and unique. Nice collection. Read it alongside Don’t Touch My Hair and they really complemented each other.

I have literally never read a poetry collection so fast, I just couldn’t stop reading it. Will definitely reread it and take my time but Audre Lorde is as fantastic as I imagined and much more readable than I thought. There are some brutal poems in there.

my hands grip a flaming sword that screams
while an arrogant woman masquerading as a fish
plunges in deeper and deeper
into the heart we both share
like beggars
on this moment of time
where the space ships land
I have died too many deaths
that were not mine

Powerful. Solemn. Loving. I am (perhaps too late) finding a new poetic landmark in Audre Lorde's language.

I have been woman
for a long time
beware my smile
I am treacherous with old magic
and the noon's new fury
with all your wide futures
promised
I am
woman
and not white.

Stunning. I don't believe I'm qualified to review poetry (especially written by one of the greatest poets of our time), but I found this work incredibly compelling.
