wow this book took me on a wild journey. i was invested until the very end, wanting to know what happened to yun ling in the camp and what happened to aritomo. perhaps because this is written by a fellow malaysian (and more importantly, fellow penangite!!) the characters were larger than life to me. i must admit i prefer the gift of rain, tan’s other book but this one is also compelling and managed to keep me hooked until the very last page.

I couldn't quite give this book 4 stars but it is very well written and an interesting perspective on a historical period.
Tan has the ability to draw you gently into a book, and gives you a tremendous sense of place. In The Garden of Evening Mists, we are back in Malaya, A judge is returning to her estate after many years. She will soon lose her memory, and she must write down the story of her life, particularly of the garden she helped build years before.
My pick to win the 2012 Man Booker Prize. I may be biased, being set in Malaysia and all that, but I thought it was really good. The story's a meditation on remembrance and forgetting. The descriptions of jungle and the garden were very rich. I didn't want it to end.
I truly enjoyed this book - however, my review will be available on my blog during the virtual blog tour in late March/ early April.
