There are moments of pure beauty: the writing, the scenery, the atmosphere, but I'm struggling overall with this. I hope it gets bet. Such a serious book.

Very poignant story of a Chinese woman from Malaya, caught in WW II and then the communist civil war who ends up with a Japanese gardener, despite hating the Japanese after what she and her family went through during the war. It had a bit of a lull moment at the beginning but then picked up and the second half of the book was very grappling.
