Half fiction, half fact* and a graphic novel look at Ada Lovelace and Charles Babbage both as they were, and what they might have been in a pocket universe. The drawings are really interesting and the stories are entertaining as promised. I first came across the comic online so it was delightful to learn it was going to be a book, and then to get my hands on it too.

*and with copious footnotes throughout.

I'll be honest: I didn't completely finish this. Not because I didn't enjoy it. Maybe I just wasn't in the mood for such...flightful science? The fictionalized adventures are followed by a section on the "real science", and quite interesting to juxtapose together. As someone who merely has adoration for the sciences and not any actual keen interest, I feel this was a bit lost on me. But overall, enjoyable artwork and storytelling.

This book simultaneously makes me happy and sad: it is a joyeous hodge-podge of lovely cartoons, funny foot notes and lengthy end notes, imagining a world where Ada Lovelace did *not* die young, and Charles Babbage's Analytical Engine was built and put to use by the two of them ( to fight crime, of course!). It breaks my heart that this world never was.

I liked but didn’t love this charming alternate history graphic novel. The sum was less than the pieces for me. But the illustrations are delightful - both Lovelace and Babbage are so expressive. The ideas are fun. I’m a huge fan of footnotes whether used in all seriousness or in jest, but at times they became intrusive. And yet at the same time, they also allowed the author’s passion come through and I loved experiencing that enthusiasm.

What a delightful book this is! Set in a parallel universe, Babbage and Lovelace are ninjas solving world problems with their Difference Engine! Amazing setup, drawings and great research. Perfect for a geek or computer nerd too!

I kind of fizzled out on this. Not sure what it was - seems like it's right in my wheelhouse - but this just didn't keep my interest quite enough.

So at first, I tried to read all the footnotes and extras that came with the actual comics but eventually found those to be too much. I enjoy the historical aspect of the authors and people, but I just couldn't get into the mathematical and scientific aspects of the book. I'm not a huge fan of math. I did, however, love the funny little events that Babbage and Lovelace got into in this Pocket Dimension.

Footnotes! So many wonderful, glorious, entertaining footnotes! Also, it was fun to read given that I am currently learning how to program computers myself.
