My first Brandon Sanderson! Is it my last? Probably not but I did find it incredibly hard to connect with his book emotionally. There was something flat about it despite the good storyline and somewhat compelling characters. It has shown me how many fantasy books have been influenced by Sanderson’s work, but also how far fantasy has come as a genre in the last 20 years. I would like to read his latest work to see how it compares, but I’m not sure if I will continue with the Misborn series for now.

This was a good book and a great way to start a series. My wife had me read (listen) to this one after she was finished. I like that Sanderson writes in a very clear manner. He 100% uses the 'Chekov's Gun' style. Often, it can feel like an RPG video game in how he lays out a skill in a training mission, then shows it in action, all to build to the end where everything comes into play.

Story and plot wise, this novel did surprise me with the fact there is real violence and stakes that occur. Everything isn't perfect and the heroes are fallible and make mistakes. That's cool, especially when so many stories don't have setbacks as much as they have detours for the protagonists. The characters never got too annoying which can sometimes happen in a book that is this long, and listening to it, i found very few spots where I was drifting off and it didn't seem as long as it truly is. However, I can't give it a 5 because while I know there is more story, I wasn't clamoring for it liek with some series.
