The writing isn’t amazing, but the story is pretty fun. It’s a college age Harry Potter, but darker with a little sex. I was hooked from the beginning, however I do wish there was more world building.

Trigger warning: the boys in this story are bullies and abusive, the adults aren’t any better, and there are a lot of moments that I think could really upset some people. It should probably have come with a warning, especially as a YA Fantasy Romance sort of book.

4 stars, I ordered the second one 👍🏼

TBH, I was kinda forced to read this but I didn't hate it. For someone who doesn't read fantasy, I liked this (and probably the reason I gave it a fairly high score compared to others). I loved the badass main characters, and although the bullying was definitely heavy in some places, it still somehow worked.

This book was painful to read. The writing is slow and it took until 53% of book for something interesting and compelling to actually happen that made me want to finish the book and find out. Not to mention the writing isn’t the best and reads like a CW drama or fan fiction. The use of British terms and slang (while understandable since the authors are British) is jarring and takes you out of the story since the main characters are meant to be from a “bad” part of Chicago. It’s very clear the authors had no intention of making their hometown a part of their characters beyond giving them a “rough” backstory. There are so many things in this book that give me the “ICK” that I could write a whole book about that alone.

Be warned: there is some terrible stereotypes in this book.
