Determinism is fucked

I really enjoyed this one! I've enjoyed everything I've read from Alex North so far, so it's no surprise that his latest was a success for me as well. I love the way Alex North combines crime, mystery, thriller, horror, and supernatural elements to craft a compelling story.

My only complaint with this story is a felt like there was a *bit* too much going on and some things were left feeling unresolved/not super impactful to the overall plot. I wish some elements would've been trimmed out so the focus of the story could've been on the most interesting parts (i.e. the serial killer who could see the future??) but overall I still had a really fun time reading this one and can't wait to see what Alex North does next!

Thank you to the publisher for granting me access to an ARC via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

Thank you NetGalley and Macmillan Audio for my advanced copy for review.
Unfortunately, this is the second book by this author I did not enjoy. I tried, but his style just doesn't work for me. The thing that didn't help was the audio version. I was confused for most of the book, and to be honest I'm still not too sure what happened in this book. Out of curiosity I might grab a physical copy from the library at some point in the future. But that will be solely if I manage to fit it in my busy schedule.

This is my first novel by Alex North, but it won't be my last. Definitely pick this up if you enjoy an intricately plotted mystery. Mr. North weaves a lot of threads throughout, and winds the reader through quite a twisty thriller!

There are a lot of characters in this one spanning multiple timelines. I listened to the audiobook, and at times I wished I had the ebook or a physical copy so I could go back and look a few things up. (The narrator was fantastic and did a great job.) There are a lot of moving pieces to keep track of along the way!

Do NOT listen to the audiobook while multitasking. There are a bunch of different characters and POVs. Not only that but the story jumps back and forth between the past and present quite often. I was so confused by the time I reached the 44% mark, that I decided to return to the beginning and start all over again. The second time around, all my focus was on the novel. Even then, I still had some issues with the writing's clarity. Therefore, the story wasn't as compelling as it could be.

Overall, I like the concept and the ending but didn't enjoy the journey.

***I would like to thank NetGalley, Alex North (the author), and Macmillan Audio for graciously sending me the audiobook to review. As always, all thoughts are my own.***

I love Alex North's writing and The Angel Maker was no exception. The concept here - that fate is preordained and nothing we do is ever not already planned - was fascinating and really well executed. The philosophy was fairly complicated, but I love the way it was presented and how it all fit together.

This is a dark book and the alternating time periods and narrators helped keep any one part too intense. It also help build suspense, make me question everything, and constantly wonder how each piece fit in the whole.

I always enjoy a book with a good investigation and North definitely delivered. That the investigation spanned past and present and held so many different moving parts was just a bonus.

The character development was also really great. There were unreliable narrators and many red herrings that kept me guessing.

I listened to this novel on audio and thought the narrators were good. The accents were a bit thick so I had to slow some parts down and I may have missed some bits here and there, but ultimately, this one worked great for audio.

Thank you to MacMillan Audio, Celadon Books, and NetGalley for the copy.

First, I just want to say this was one of my most anticipated 2023 releases. Serial killer thrillers and police procedurals are some my favorite and most read genres and Alex North is one of the greats. So the epitome of having really high hopes. When Celadon did the LFL drop with advance reader copies, I made my husband drive me two total hours to the nearest participating LFL and I was very sad it was not there. Side story: This whole thing also led to me buying and putting up my own LFL. Then I basically begged the publisher’s instagram page to send me a copy. Which they did eventually (thank you!), but I had already been approved for the audiobook through NetGalley/Macmillan Audio, and I was eager, so audiobook is how I decided to consume it first.

I finished the audiobook and unfortunately while I believe I understood most of the overarching plot, I was still very confused about the characters and some of details and I’m left with a lot of remaining questions. When I listen to audiobooks, it’s normally when I am at rest and not doing something else simultaneously, so it wasn’t for a lack of paying attention.

I consume books in all three ways - digitally on my kindle e-reader, on audiobook, and through physical copy. Although the narrator was fantastic, I think this book is probably better read and understood through physically reading whether it be a physical copy or on an e-reader, not just because of the alternating viewpoints but particularly given the continuous shift between using first and last names for characters, characters with multiple names, multiple characters referred to by the same names… etc. I could have done without that until which time it may have become necessary through the plot.

I am totally willing to give my physical copy another stab in the near future, but for now at least, I’m rating this book at three stars a/k/a it was alright but fell a little flat for me. I will still recommend to my bookstagram and friends interested in serial killer plots and Alex North.

Thank you to NetGalley, Macmillan Audio, Celadon Books, and Alex for advance listener and reader copies in exchange for an honest review!

This one has many characters and lots of threads that make it a bit hard to track initially, but I loved reading how it all came together. I was totally engrossed in this one, but the last chapter was a huge disappointment to me.......those few pages kept it from being a total win. I still recommend this one, but know that there are a few downsides before you dive in.
