One of the best books I've read all year. Absolutely gripping. Full of twists, and turns. I tried to guess what was going on but failed miserably as always!

After reading and obsessing over The Whisper Man, I thought North would be a go-to author for me. Unfortunately, he’s turned into be a one hit wonder instead. This was my third book by North, and the hardest to get through. I honestly couldn’t even tell you what it’s about, because it couldn’t keep my attention. I wanted to love it, but sadly, this definitely wasn’t for me.

Pretty good mystery with the “is it supernatural or is it all hype” motif. I wish it had been a tad more unpredictable.

Here is what Amazon has to say about this book:

Growing up in a beautiful house in the English countryside, Katie Shaw lived a charmed life.  At the cusp of graduation, she had big dreams, a devoted boyfriend, and a little brother she protected fiercely.  Until the day a violent strager changed the fate of her family forever.

Years later, still unable to live down the guilt surrounding what happened to her brother, Chris, and now with a child of her own to protect, Katie struggles to separate the real threats from the imagined.  Then she gets a phone call: Chris has gone missing and needs his big sister once more.

Meanwhile, Detectie Laurence Page is facing a particularly gruesome crime.  A distinguished professor of fate and free will has been brutally murdered just hours after firing his staff.  All the leads point back to two old cases: the gruesome attack on teenager Christopher Shaw, and the despicable crimes of a notorious serial killer who, legend had it, could see the future.

This was an okay book.  I do like Alex North - I have read his other two books, but this one wasn't as good as those in my opinion.  I liked the idea, and some of the characters.  And I did like the ending - how they wound what seemed like two separate stories together.  But the rest of the book seemed so disjointed that the ending didn't make up for the middle.

Review:

Set up was good, execution not at all

Review previously placed on my blog:

I'm currently reading The half burnt house by Alex North. I'm reading a copy from the library. Reading this for my Authors TBR. This is an adult thriller.

Enjoying this a lot so far. Alex North is one of the few thriller authors I know I can trust to write a good thriller with no problematic elements. In fact this one has some diversity in it, which I think is awesome. It's very casual, but that is exactly what I like for these kind of books. Story itself is really good, it has a lot of elements. Excited to see where it is going.

Well... this went downhill quickly. This book just did not work. Mainly because there were a lot of perspectives and we got to know a lot of information because of that. The suspence was therefore lacking a lot.
