Keiko is a human but has been born again a convenience store worker. She does not have a husband. She does not have children. And this sets her apart in a world where she already feels like she does not belong. She belongs amongst the packaged foods and sounds of Smile Mart.

yeah, yeah, it's a critique about society and conformity, but why is no one discussing how it's also a novel about autism?

little light japanese contemporary that's super quirky and comical. thoroughly captured my attention throughout with Murata's writing - metaphors on society... descriptions of the MC's thought processes and behaviour with how socially inept she is... it's pretty humorous how desperately she tries to be a 'normal' and constantly thinks of rules for every action or face she puts up. as a psych person, the in-depth vie on the MC's cognition, along with the other characters and themes were definitely what kept things interesting.
