About
Welcome to the Missed Classics Club's first pick, The Bell Jar by Sylvia Plath!
We'll be reading from October 19 to November 13. I'll be honest: I'm new to Storygraph and not super familiar with all its features, but I'm sure we can figure it out together.
And as a reminder, I'm hosting a live Chat over on Substack on Wednesday, October 30 at 8-9:00pm EST to discuss the first half of the book.
Happyish reading!

Introductions!
Target: 19 Oct 2024
Hi all! As this is our club's first pick, I thought it would be nice to get to know each other a bit.
I'm Clara from Uruguay/Miami, and my favorite book is probably Jane Austen's Persuasion. My most recent read is Maggie O'Farrell's Instructions for a Heatwave, which I loved.

Initial Impressions (Chs. 1-5)
Hi friends! As a reminder, we'll be discussing chapters 1-10 on the Substack chat on Wednesday at 8pm EST, but before that, I wanted to open it up to initial impressions people may have had/be having as they read The Bell Jar for the first time, or perhaps re-read it several years later.
As for me, I've read some of Plath's poetry and for some reason I never expected her prose to be so ... casual? It reads a lot -- to me -- like J.D. Salinger, which was surprising. (Full disclosure, unlike a lot of people I actually still like Catcher in the Rye and *love* Franny and Zooey, so the comparison is not meant pejoratively!)
Has there been anything that's surprised you thus far, pleasantly or unpleasantly?
