Overture - Chapter 13 Discussion

Target: 12 Jun 2024

Hey there, everyone! I'm so glad you could join me in chatting about Heartless Hunter.

So, let's get to it!

Let's start with the heart of the story: the trio: Rune, Verity, and Alex. Their friendship is not just warm; it's a bonfire of loyalty. You can tell that these are not just three people; they are a family that cares about each other.

Rune, with her almost perfect ruse, is a character that keeps you on your toes. However, her perfection is too perfect, raising suspicions among some. Her airheadedness isn't fooling everyone, adding a layer of intrigue to her character.

I do like seeing Gideon tormented. It gives his character some complexities. He has reasons for hating witches and believes in what he is doing, but he doesn't seem to believe in unnecessary violence.

He suffered at the hands of the youngest sister, the witch queen.

Like I said, complex.

A fairly obvious love triangle exists between Rune, Alex, and Gideon. Usually, sibling love triangles deter me, but I like it here because we already have that established dynamic between Alex and Rune. There is history there, so there is depth to it.

The cat-and-mouse trope going on here is so well done. I love how Rune and Gideon are playing one another. Reading them together makes me smile.

Chapters 14 - 29 Highlights

Target: 19 Jun 2024

I love how caring Alex is. He protected her even though his brother is a member of the Blood Guard. Even though the witch queens harmed his family, he's not judging a whole race of people by the actions of a few bad apples. He has every reason to hate witches, but he chooses kindness instead.

I'm over the moon that Gideon designed her a dress. Even though he has ulterior motives, it is still a thoughtful and kind gesture.

The mystery surrounding Cressida's actions and their impact on Gideon is a source of intrigue. It's clear that he still carries the scars of her deeds, but what exactly did she do? This question lingers, adding a layer of suspense to the narrative.

I loved that bonding moment over the dresses in the family's old shop. It almost seems frivolous, a girl gushing over dresses.

Still, considering the history there, Gideon's connection to his family's business, and the fact that he can design a dress, Rune shows a level of reverence for him. She is showing more of herself to him, allowing him to see a glimpse of her past the facade.

That trap! My heart was racing during that entire scene. I was freaking out because we're only halfway through the book. She can't get caught now! I'm so glad she covered her bases.

This book is challenging to put down.
