The common name "spectacled bear" comes from the light-colored fur on its face, chest and neck, which can look like glasses on some individuals. Another name for this animal is the "Andean bear" because it lives in the Andes mountains. The scientific name Tremarctos ornatus means "hole-bearing decorated bear". The hole refers to a distinctive feature on the bear's upper arm bone. The decoration refers to the light-colored fur that gives the bear its spectacles.

The spectacled bear has a medium size among bears. Its coat is usually dark, ranging from black to brown or even reddish. It often has light-colored marks on its face and upper chest that look like glasses, but not all of them do. These marks are unique for each bear and help to identify them.
Spectacled bears have no need to hibernate because they can find food all year long. They are mostly active during the day. In captivity, they can live up to 20 years or more, but their lifespan in the wild is unknown.
