Reading YA books in the month of August! Hosted by @mariandiepb and @suey.
To gamify this challenge, we've assigned genres and other reading prompts to each card in a deck of playing cards. The idea is to read enough YA this month in order to create a Poker hand! Books can be fiction or non-fiction, but must be considered YA!
Suits:
Hearts: Romance or Contemporary
Diamonds: SciFi or Dystopian
Spades: Mystery/Thriller/Horror
Clubs: Fantasy or Romantasy
Ace: Disability or Mental Health Representation
King: History, Government, Politics, Social Class, Culture
Queen: Female protagonist or author
Jack: Queer Representation
10: Five (or ten) star rating on Storygraph/Goodreads, or a blurb made you pick it up
9: published or set in the 90s
8: published or set in the 80s
7: published or set in the 70s
6: published or set in the 60s
5: Novella, short story or essay
4: coming of age story, or story in translation
3: retelling
2: mood reading (wild card!)
Poker Hands:
Royal Flush: A,K, Q, J, 10 of the same suit
Straight Flush: 5 cards in a row of the same suit
Four of a kind: same card of each suit
Full House: 3 of a kind, and 2 of a kind
Flush: five cards in the same suit
Straight: 5 in a row, but different suits
Three of a kind: 3 cards of the same number, but different suits
Two Pairs: two pairs of cards that are the same, but different suits
Pair: one pair of cards that are the same, but different suits
High Card: an Ace!
