Reading Glasses 2021 Challenge

Hosted by zembla

182 participants, 689 books added

Starts: Friday, 01 January 2021

Ends: Friday, 31 December 2021

Reading Glasses is a podcast about book culture and literary life, designed to help you read better. Because it's all about life as a reader, its annual challenge includes book prompts and reading-related activities.

Reading Glasses (@ReadingGPodcast; @readingglassespodcast) is hosted by Mallory O'Meara, the author of The Lady From the Black Lagoon and the forthcoming Girly Drinks, and Brea Grant, the author of Mary: The Adventures of Mary Shelley's Great-Great-Great-Great-Great-Granddaughter.

The 2021 challenge was announced in episode 183 ("2020 Reading Glasses Challenge and 2021 Announcement!").

(Previously: the 2020 challenge.)

Challenge prompts

1. Read a banned book (51 books added)

2. Read a poetry collection (105 books added)

3. Read a microhistory (100 books added)

bonus
6. Activity: Figure out your wheelhouse (71 books added)

The StoryGraph is set up to count books that are "read" within the challenge's time range, so it won't mark this prompt as completed unless you add to it a book that you read this year.

If you read a book from your wheelhouse this year, you can add that book to this prompt to mark it as complete.

I've also set this as a Bonus Prompt just in case, so you can still complete the whole challenge even if this prompt doesn't show as complete.

bonus
7. Activity: Attend a virtual book event (51 books added)

If you attend an event related to a book that you read this year, you can add that book to this prompt to mark it as complete.

I've also set this as a Bonus Prompt just in case, so you can still complete the whole challenge even if this prompt doesn't show as complete.

bonus
8. Activity: Review a bookstore/boost a bookstore on social media (19 books added)

If you review or boost a bookstore from which you got a book that you read this year, you can add that book to this prompt to mark it as complete.

I've also set this as a Bonus Prompt just in case, so you can still complete the whole challenge even if this prompt doesn't show as complete.

9. Activity: Review a book by a BIPOC (102 books added)

bonus
10. Activity: Get rid of a book you'll never read (45 books added)

The StoryGraph is set up to count books that are "read" within the challenge's time range, so it will only count this as completed if you've marked the book as read this year. Tricky for an I'll-never-read-this challenge!

Do add the book you've let go, even though that won't mark the prompt as "complete." I've set this as a Bonus Prompt, so that won't keep you from completing the whole challenge.
