Overview

Out of print children's books you come across at charity shops, libraries, secondhand websites and sales, or your own attic or cupboard can still be so good! Let's show these forgotten books some love!

Many people don't realise that children's books often don't have a specific reason for being out of print, and might mistakenly assume it's because they contain politically incorrect material (which is definitely an issue for some books - but I've read plenty of out of print children's books with literally no offensive material whatsoever, too.) Most of the time, the reason is just because the book's over a decade old and not written by a "big name" author, or it was originally promoting a toy or product that's no longer available to buy new, so publishing companies choose not to print or promote them anymore. 

Also "out of print" doesn't necessarily mean "old" as in "ancient" - I'm not asking you to seek out rare first edition copies of long forgotten Victorian titles (although you can do that if you want and have the budget, of course!) Most (if not all) of the out of print children's books I read are from the 1990s, 2000s or 2010s so don't feel that old other than not featuring more recent electronic devices. So these are more than fine for this challenge :)

Tips for how to tell if a book is in print or out of print: 
  • If a book is still widely available at high-street book retailers and is still advertised and available to buy from the publisher's website, that means it's probably in print.
  • If a book doesn't seem to appear much or at all on high-street bookshelves, isn't available on the publisher's website and is only available for online purchase from secondhand websites such as eBay, that means it must be out of print.
