Fiction at the Intersections (#OwnVoices)

29 participants (534 books)

Overview

A lot can be said for how much we can learn about people’s experiences from fiction. So, take a journey outside of your comfort zone while you open up to new ideas and information. We are all biased. We can all work on ourselves to overcome these biases that cause so many issues in our world.

These prompts cover the intersections of race, nationality, religion, class, sexuality, gender, disability, and so much more

Use #OwnVoices books, ones where the author shares identities with the main character(s).

Reading an Own Voices book means being confident that the worlds created or described in a book are represented as authentically as possible. Own Voices authors and illustrators create not with an observer’s gaze, but with the cultural nuance from being an active member of that culture. (Source)

Consider this challenge as a step in your never-ending journey toward learning about other cultures, acceptance of everyone, and anti-racism.
