For the 2025 Trans Rights Readathon, we’ve included 5 core prompts and 25 optional prompts. You can complete the challenge however you’d like, either by using the ‘bonus’ categories to find options for the main 5 prompts to read during the readathon, or by aiming for a total of 30 books before the end of the year. It’s up to you! Please keep in mind that ALL books should be by trans authors and/or include trans main characters.

As you match books to each prompt, please be respectful of the personal information authors divulge and how they self-identify. If an author doesn’t include the personal information you’re looking for, please don’t contact them to ask for an explanation of their identity, orientation, or background. If information isn’t available in an author’s bio, social media, or on their website, they don’t owe it to you. In an era when people’s identities are being used to target them, please be mindful that we want to CELEBRATE these stories and support authors while keeping each other safe. 🩵🩷🤍

One of our core prompts is to read a book with 2Spirit, Indigiqueer, Third Gender, and/or Indigenous Gender Expansive rep. Many of these identities existed prior to colonization, and they aren’t always synonymous with comparable Western labels associated with gender and sexuality, or imply some specific combination thereof. Please note that 2Spirit, Indigiqueer, and other non-Western Third Genders exist outside of Western concepts of gender and sexuality, and an author who identifies as 2S may not identify as trans. In this same vein, please be mindful and do not include 2Spirit people and characters in other categories beside this designated one unless they explicitly also identify as trans.
