Overview

Latinx / Hispanic Heritage Month is recognized and celebrated month long starting on September 15th through October 15th. While it is encouraged and necessary to read books from Latino authors all year long, this year feels especially important to read from works from Latino authors due to the political climate that has been growing evermore hostile towards this community. I have created this challenge for a few years now and normally have only included prompts that fulfill a genre type instead of directly pushing towards specific reading material to make the challenge easier to join and complete. This year however I will be using specific books that lean in favor of more nonfiction works that address the challenges that Latinos face all year long not just this month but also highlight accomplishments and progress Latinos have made, in the U.S specifically. I will also make this a yearlong challenge that will end at the start of the 2026 Hispanic heritage month celebration to make the prompts more manageable and to encourage all to engage fully with their choices instead of cramming through them to meet your desired quota. The books I have picked are ones I have read throughout the years and have recommended to anyone who wants to learn more about specific experiences, underrated authors, or just read a good novel. Others include books I have been working on or wish to read in the future. Bonus prompts are books that do not center Latinx voices but do show the solidarity, historical continuity, and intersectionality that should exist with other marginalized communities and will hopefully show how issues affecting Latinos are not isolated.
