Overview

Welcome to the Branching Out Book Club’s second annual readathon!

From June 16-29, we invite you to hang out here in the Discord #readathon channel, share your progress, and generally cheer each other on as we read. This channel will open one week before the event so y’all can plan your TBRs!

How it works

For anyone new to the concept, a readathon is basically a fun little reading challenge, where we read books based on predetermined prompts.

For this readathon we have put together seven BoB related prompts. You complete a prompt by reading a book that matches the specified criteria. “Winning” the readathon is as simple as completing all seven prompts! (But really aren’t we all winners just for showing up to read? 🙃😘)

When you’ve completed a prompt, fill out this form to let us know: https://forms.gle/VFXe1HgPVB7xNvdg6

Filling out the form lets us keep track of everyone’s progress, announce winners, and share some fun stats at the end of the readathon.

A quick FAQ

What do I get if I win?
Besides glory and a sense of accomplishment, people who complete all seven prompts during the readathon will get assigned a super fancy, 2025 exclusive, Tree Herder role. Does this role give you any special powers? No. Do we now what a Tree Herder is? Also no. But it does give you eternal bragging rights.

Can we count a book for more than one prompt?
For this readathon, we’ve decided each book can be used to complete a maximum of two prompts. So, for instance, if you read Do Not Say We Have Nothing (which is both historical fiction and features a bird on its cover) you could use it to complete both the Wisteria and Magnolia prompts.

I started a book before the readathon started… can I count it for this readathon?
Listen, we’re not here to be sticklers! We’ll leave it up to each of you to decide if you want to count books partially read during the readathon. (Though if the book is 500 pages and you only read 1 page during the readathon, maybe don’t count that 😉)

I'm struggling to think of a book to fit [prompt]
Almost every readathon there's at least one prompt you just can't think of a book for. But never fear! Ask for suggestions and ideas here in #readathon!

Does [book] meet the criteria for [prompt]?
What counts as knowledge? Is that blob a bird? Who knows! We’re not here to be super strict about fitting books into categories. If you feel a book fits a prompt, then it probably does. (Within reason, The Fault in our Stars still doesn't have a protagonist over 40 😝) Of course, feel free to discuss your categorization woes here in  #readathon.
