Book Riot shared an incredible map, created and published by Preply, of the most translated book by country, listing every country in the world by continent!

Some of the books are definitely a surprise, and they may not all be offered in English translation, but there's no better way to read the world and learn about diverse experiences than by reading in translation (other than, perhaps, reading in the original language itself).

Certainly, any list of countries, especially one defining a country's literature, makes a political statement. There are countries missing from this list (notably, North and South Korea are combined, and Iraq and several island nations are not listed), and the authors have a range of political beliefs and backgrounds. I have done my best to create this list exactly as listed by Preply and Book Riot without offering political commentary of my own.

That said, I have tried to indicate texts that are 1) not available in English translation or 2) not published in the country listed. Additionally, many of the countries listed have a long history of oral storytelling, but a limited canon of written literature, particularly in their own language. To the best of my ability, I have listed links to alternative texts, though I have not necessarily combed those links for texts that answer those questions.

Let's get started!
