Five Year Diverse Reading Challenge

Hosted by tsprengel

30 participants, 599 books added

Starts: Sunday, 08 October 2023

Ends: Sunday, 31 December 2028

The Challenge:
Join me in a multiyear reading challenge to diversify our reading - fiction, nonfiction, or a mix of the two. I'm doing all nonfiction, but want to make sure that this challenge is flexible so as many people join as possible. Since it is such an extensive list of topics, I have it running from today through 12/31/2028 to make sure everyone has time to complete it regardless of reading pace as well.

As of right now, the challenge is broken down into these sections:

1. Regions of the World
2. Countries (top 10 by population excluding the United States)
3. Indigeneity
4. Race/Ethnicity
5. Gender/Sexuality
5. Disability/Health
6. Religion
7. Experiences
8. Current Events
9. Extras

To keep the challenge slightly more manageable, I have tried to make at least one prompt under each category optional. Generally I've marked more specific prompts as optional as they may be more challenging to find specific books for and I want to be cognizant of what books people may have access to.

There are currently:
1. 74 required prompts
2. 40 optional prompts

The Rules:
Only one. Please try to focus on Own Voices authors as much as possible. The term Own Voices means that the author is part of the marginalized group they are writing about. (e.g. a Caribbean author writing about the Caribbean, a Muslim author writing about Islam, a disabled author writing about being disabled).

If you are unable to find an Own Voices book that fits the prompt, then a book of interviews, an ethnography, etc. written by a non-Own Voices authors may be substituted, but it must feature extensive commentary coming directly from the marginalized group.

Changes/Additions:
This is by no means a full list of all possible elements of diversity, so I would be happy to have suggestions sent in by anyone who joins via this Google sheet:

Just add what category you think should be present in the challenge and why you think it should be added to the sheet. I will review it and add additional categories if it seems appropriate.

Warning: This challenge is likely to be in flux throughout these three years, so do not be surprised to see the formatting change, categories be added, etc.
