The Center for Fiction First Novel Prize, first awarded in 2006, was created to honor the best debut fiction of the year. The winner receives a $15,000 prize, and each shortlisted author receives $1,000. The First Novel Prize is given to a debut novel published in the United States between January 1 and December 31 of the competing year.  This prize was formerly called the John Sargent, Sr. First Novel Prize from 2006-2009 and the Flaherty-Dunnan First Novel Prize from 2010-2014.
