Overview
Reading to children has innumerable benefits to their development - intellectually, emotionally, socially, and more. It helps them make sense of the world around them. It boosts memory, cognitive development, empathy, imagination, and problem-solving. It exposes them to new ideas and diverse ways of thinking. Besides all of that, reading to children is wonderful for bonding.
My kids love reading and are constantly jumping on my lap, shoving books in my face - often while I'm in the middle of something already - and begging me to read. I tell them "no, not now" way too much. This challenge is to encourage parents everywhere, especially myself, to set aside what I'm reading or working on long enough to read with them out loud. Once a week should be doable.
Note: If you do not have full custody of your children, just read what you can in the time that you have. It is still a worthwhile and rewarding activity to do together. 💕 Power to you! Librarians and educators are welcomed too!
Note2: If you're worried about how this challenge may skew your adult reading stats, know that on average, picture books are 32 pages long. Just add 50 books and/or 1600 pages to your reading goals. (50×32=1600)
Quick reference:
1-10: broad categories
11-20: illustration-focused
21-30: author-focused
31-40: around-the-world
41-50: your choice
51+: bonuses (I may add to this throughout the year)
