Idaho Book Banning EXTRAVAGANZA

Overview

This is going to be a long one! In 2024 Idaho passed HB 710 which requires libraries to move books deemed "harmful to minors" to an adults-only section of the library. The criteria for this determination is vague and extremely subjective at best, and anyone can submit a complaint on behalf of a minor to have a title removed/relocated from a library.

At the same time, the extreme conservative group ironically named "Growing Freedom for Idaho" (which seems to be patterned after Moms for Freedom) has developed a list of more than 400 books they have deemed "harmful to minors". They are pushing to have these books removed (or even preemptively banned) from school and local libraries in the state. Most of the books on this list are focused on topics like race, sexuality and gender or simply feature LGBTQIA+ or BIPOC characters. Some have been deemed harmful for "occult" content, and some for sexual content. (For documentation you can download the PDF of this list, which includes the group's own notations for each title, here or visit their website.)

Multiple school districts across the state have removed books from their shelves in the last three years due to similar "concerns" without using a transparent review process or accepting input from the community regarding these decisions.

I thought it would be worthwhile to keep a list of books these groups are looking to ban (or have successfully banned), because it's worth paying attention to. Similar lists are being used in other states like Florida and Utah. This list continues to grow as the criteria for "harmful to minors" is seemingly endless and is explicitly targeted towards marginalized and non-Christian groups, and it's only when we see the full list that we can really see that pattern in context. I've put a star by any titles that I have been able to confirm have been removed/relocated by a school or public library in the state, all others are titles that have been specifically included in Growing Freedom's list of "concerns". Some of these titles may still have been removed or relocated from library shelves, it has just become more difficult to access that information (for example, Kootenai County Library system not only created an adults-only section in many of their libraries, but removed 140 titles from their shelves "for review" and did not release a list of these titles to the general public, it had to be requested via public records request).

This movement censors freedom of speech and limits the access and ability of individuals and parents to determine what is appropriate for themselves and their own children to read.

Please use this challenge however you see fit! As a reading challenge, as a reference list, as a discussion point, as a possible book buying list for your local little free library, or just as a  selection of (potentially*) awesome titles to scroll through for your next read. I'm leaving it open ended and active for as long as it's needed.

I'll add new titles as I hear about them. I'll also try to include sources to access these titles digitally for free/subscription* where I can find them (although I can't guarantee I'll be able to keep that up to date with the number of titles on this list).

*Please note:
I'm not promoting the books on this list, I haven't read many of them! Some of them may be terrible books for plenty of reasons, but the point is that readers and parents of young readers should be able to determine that for themselves.
I am also not promoting or supporting these subscription services just noting availability for access purposes.
