I didn't read my first Toni Morrison book until three years after I finished my English degree. I've read at least one book by most of the authors on the English literary canon but nearly all of those authors are white. There are so many Black literary greats whose names I know well but books I have never read. In previous years I've read though great African and Caribbean authors but I've never centered on great African American literary - the stuff that shaped this culture. 

This list of authors isn't exhaustive but it's a start.
