#TheBigFatAntiOppressionReadingChallenge

Dear folks of Storygraph,

We are hoping 2023 has been kind to you.

As 2024 begins in just a few days, we fervently wish it is nicer than this. While we struggled a bit this year with our general reading, we managed to complete #a_short_story_per_day  activity successfully with a tiny hiccup somewhere in the middle. The completion would not have been possible without the generous support and enthusiasm of Danae AlThor   (Rohini) and Swagata Tarafdar  . Rohini has continued to be with us on the team since then and it has been pretty wholesome so far.

We were unsure of whether or not to prepare the reading challenge prompts this year. But then we decided why not do it for ourselves and then if someone wants to join, well, more fun!

During our brainstorming, we figured that for the number of topics we want to cover this year, simply calling it the #ReadingIndiaChallenge might limit the scope. We said we shall expand it to the Global South. But then the UN definitions kept making it tougher. Why are some countries that have been robbed off their wealth for ages, but somehow managed to do ok for themselves despite, being denied the truth that they had to struggle to rise above oppression? Such and more questions have made us conclude that the reading challenge will have to have scope beyond geographies. And hence, we are calling it #TheBigFatAntiOppressionReadingChallenge. Yeah, it's a long name, but so has been the history of oppression.

With what's happening in Palestine today, and closer home with our own folks, we hope this challenge helps all of you look at our differences with curiosity and compassion, than contempt and violence (and we don't just mean physical).

We shall be posting the prompts, followed by the recommendations, shortly.

(We have tried to keep some recommendations India - based , so if someone wants to read stuff specific to India, they can easily join in too.)

Ciao!
