Overview
This is a challenge to read the works of the Japanese author Natsume Soseki (lived 1867-1916).
The included works are listed in chronological order of publication. It is not at all an exhaustive list of his writings, just what seems relatively easily available in English. But all versions and translations of his works are welcome!
I have marked anything that isn't a complete novel (like his nonfiction, short stories, and unfinished book) as bonuses, so you can customize this challenge to your tastes.
I have also added a bonus challenge to read a nonfiction work about the author. I will be reading the biography Sōseki: Modern Japan's Greatest Novelist by John Nathan.
Early in Sanshiro, a character tells the young protagonist that, "even bigger than Japan is the inside of your head", and I have never connected with another author's depiction of the inside of one's head quite like I have with Soseki's. I hope you enjoy his writing, too.
