The StoryGraph's Genre Challenge 2021

As well as our Translation Challenge and Onboarding Challenge (TBC!) for 2021, we decided to create a third one to help you explore some genres that might be outside your comfort zone!

To complete a prompt, simply read a book that matches both specifications for the prompt. If you do happen to find a book which fits multiple prompts, feel free to use it for both.

We hope you have fun and discover some great new authors, and you might even surprise yourself and find a new favourite genre too!

Challenge prompts

1. A memoir or autobiography by an Indigenous author (275 books added)

2. A horror-comedy (347 books added)

This can be anything within the horror genre with a light-hearted or slapstick element, and adult, middle grade, young adult, and children's novels all count too.

3. A crime/thriller novel written by a Black author (230 books added)

4. A historical fiction novel not set during World War One or World War Two (1035 books added)

Lots of people don't tend to read historical fiction because they think it's all just war-time fiction! Hopefully this prompt will encourage you to look for historical fiction outside of both the World Wars.

5. A literary or contemporary novel written by a trans or non-binary author (292 books added)

This can include romance! Young adult is cool too, as long as it's contemporary!

6. A graphic novel written by an author from outside the US or UK (467 books added)

7. A middle grade novel written by a Latinx author (174 books added)

8. A poetry collection under 100 pages (499 books added)

9. A short story collection by a new-to-you author (674 books added)

This should be the first thing you've read by the author you choose.

10. A young adult, middle grade or children's novel written by an author who also writes books for adults (678 books added)
