You can start and finish this challenge whenever you like!

A reading challenge based on the periodic table! This challenge is open to interpretation in any way you want. No start or end date since this will be long.

Some ideas are:
  • The most obvious, a book dealing directly with the element, it's discovery or use.

  • Related to its atomic symbol/abbreviation, i.e. the symbol is a part of the book title, author name, main character name, etc. set in a city whose name includes the symbol or is the country code (for example, Latvia is LV).

  • Related to its atomic number, i.e. number of books in the series, page numbers, age of characters, age of author, book number published by author (their 1st book, 2nd, etc). Manipulate the numbers to be part of a publication date, 1 becomes 2001. Or a book set in 2107 could fulfill 107. A very broad interpretation could even be the book number it makes for you, for example, the 5th book you've read this year. For elements with 3 digit atomic numbers, a book set in or author from the corresponding city/country area code.

  • Related to the element's name origin (Wikipedia breaks that down in a table under "list of chemical elements", i.e. neon is derived from the Greek word for 'new' which could be interpreted as a debut or a newly released or purchased book. Some of the element names are inspired by mythological deities so a book including the deity would work. 41 of the elements have names associated with places or astronomical objects, a book set at/on the places they are named for.

  • Related to the year it was discovered, i.e. a book set or published in that year, by an author or character born in that year, etc.

  • Related to the discover(s) of the element, i.e. either directly about the discover(s) or a book with an author or character with the same first or last name. A book set or the author is from the city where the element was discovered.
