The Rape of Nanking by Iris Chang

3.0

Obviously a very important subject matter but unfortunately the book itself was not great. The structure and the layout of the book lacked cohesiveness and balance. Iris Chang is very emotionally involved in this book and it shows (which I don’t know if that’s necessarily a good thing or bad thing). Personally I found it a little unsettling that she spent a longer time explaining and researching the Nazi John Rabe than any other foreigners. And she made sure to make it a point that while he was a Nazi he wasn’t a terrible person it was just his political alignment. Overall not a terribly written book but it definitely needs work.
