How to Catch a Mole: And Find Yourself in Nature by Marc Hamer

dark emotional funny informative inspiring mysterious reflective

4.5

I was looking for something different when I came across this book, and I found it! I had no idea moles were so weird and fascinating. Bits of natural history are beautifully woven together with the author's life experience as a homeless wanderer and later a gardener, his sense of "oneness" with nature that is not at all sentimental. We may not all be called to live outdoors, but we must become more aware of the mystery of our environment, the amazing web of life, even as the machine of destruction grinds on. It may seem hopeless but books like this still give me hope. The human ability to recognize and celebrate beauty and wonder in what we otherwise thoughtlessly consume creates another level of existence, one that is built bit by bit, book by book.
