It took around 100 pages until I was fully interested in the story. Compelled by the characters and the detective work of Jean, I started to believe in the impossibility of single parentage. I wanted to believe it, I so wanted Jean to be able to provide this proof for her new friends in the Tilburys, securing herself into their family where she seemed to fit so perfectly. With only her mother in her life to provide companionship and duty, it felt that she was finally finding a new life with friends and fulfilment. I can’t help but feel that it all turned out very bleak, with the revelation about Margaret’s parentage and the romance which likely led to the breakdown of Jeans friendship with Gretchen. The abrupt ending of the book highlighted how quickly Jean may have lost her new life, so soon after she found it.
