Air Awakens by Elise Kova

I got this several years ago in a free ebook bundle and decided to read it to while away the time after our power went out in a summer storm. I don’t think we’re breaking any new or even particularly interesting ground here with this one, but it’s a perfectly serviceable YA fantasy that was great for filling a few empty hours. The worldbuilding is light and pretty simplistic, not really a book that is going to win many points for originality. I think it’s kind of hilarious that in a setting where magic is elemental and largely hereditary (well not hereditary, but genetic perhaps? Like related to geographical origins), one of the various kingdoms is trying to conquer the others, and one of its key players is literally referred to as the “Fire Lord.” Like…come on.
Anyways, I’ll probably slowly work my way through the rest of the series, if only because I have them all in a set, and, despite the simplicity, it was still fairly entertaining. It was profoundly just okay.
