I really liked this book. Schwab's writing is so beautiful, haunting, mysterious, lyrical, and ethereal and this book was no exception. I love listening to it. I love the slow build-up of what is happening so you slowly put the pieces together to get the full picture. It gives you plenty of time to learn the characters as well.
I liked Olivia and her defiance, even though she would take it too far sometimes. I also liked her desire to find a family and a place where she belongs and is wanted. It's something that a lot of people can identify and connect with. I also liked that she was given a choice in this book where both ends gave her just that. She was wanted and could belong in either the shadow world or Gallant and she had to choose which one she wanted more and I think Schwab did a great job of making the wrong choice seem like it could be a good thing for her. It really made me wonder which one she would choose for a minute,
especially when her cousin Matthew, her last living relative, was killed.
I didn't know what she would do and it was thrilling to see how she navigated that.
Schwab has a really interesting way of shaping her endings where the reader isn't sure how things will go in the more long-term but it's still an ending because the main character got what they really wanted. I remember feeling the same way about the ending of Addie LaRue. Like it didn't tie everything up in a nice little bow, but it was enough of an ending for that character to actually end the book. It's so different from the endings you usually see and I find that I like that difference and how thought-provoking it is.
Anyway, this is another beautiful story from Schwab and I can't wait to read more of her books in the new year.
