I tried reading this book probably about 3 or 4 years ago now and couldn’t get into it for the life of me, but I kept seeing it everywhere and hearing good things about it. Knowing that my reading taste had evolved a lot, I decided to try it again and I am soooo glad I did. I love unique retellings of old stories and I think this was the first book I’ve ever read with Arthurian ties and I greatly enjoyed it. This book had just the right balance of action and mystery and emotion, and the twist at the end!! I can’t read to read the sequel!

I almost gave this book 4.75 stars because at times I felt Bree was just not being logical at all. Prime example- During the second test when Sel takes over for Nick, why didn’t she try to arm herself more, or at least prepare herself for an attack? Sel had been set against her literally the entire book and she suddenly thought Oh yeah this guy’s trustworthy?? That whole scene felt very predictable but fact that he then SAVES HER and completely changes their relationship kind of made it up for me.

I think this is my biggest question at this point- Bree and Nick are in a relationship, but with the twist at the end, I know there’s no blood actually shared but they’re at least in-laws right?? And we’re just letting this slide?? I know they like to keep the bloodlines close but this feels a bit much. I need explanations
