The Cardturner: A Novel about a King, a Queen, and a Joker by Louis Sachar
3.0
I picked this up b/c we just finished watching Holes with the kids (which still totally stands up--it's so funny!) and I realized that maybe Louis Sachar had some books for kids that I might wanna read.
And this book isn't really a kids' book, it's about a teenager and there's a first kiss...but really it's about Bridge. Like the card game.
And it's also kinda about a teen being influenced/coming of age b/c of an eccentric old uncle.
But, really, it's about Bridge.
Like really, really, really about Bridge.
If you can't follow detailed conversations about spades and hearts and diamonds, you might not want to read this. But, it was kinda cool, too b/c I am always intrigued by sub-cultures and learning about people/places where'd I'd never go or experience. And this was totally that--b/c I didn't get half of the Bridge conversation in the book. But I still liked it.
As far as if your kid is reading it--there was a bit of teen stuff (deleted language, ogling girls, disobeying parents) that I didn't love and wouldn't love for my kids to read. But nothing really to speak of.
However, I can't imagine a kid making it thru this book...unless they are just strangely into cards.
