A Stitch in Time
by Kelley Armstrong
This was a delightful, curl up with a piping hot cup of tea kind of book. Which, fittingly, is what our main character and heroine finds herself doing quite often. And well she should: after all, this book is set in middle-of-moors-nowhere England, in a big, spooky old manor house. Did I read this while curled up with a cup of tea? No, unfortunately I was squeezed onto a tiny little airplane--but boy did this one pass the travel time excellently.
This is part gothic drama, part ghost story, part romance, part time travel. OKAY but wait, bear with me, it WORKS. It really does. I appreciated the different layers of this book--there's a lot to like. Slowly unravelling mystery? Check. Cats? Check. Sexy and complicated love interest? Check. A main character with history, grief, an actual story? Check, check, check!
My only let down was the big reveal, which to me was a little confusing and didn't really feel like it fit. Everything was wrapped up exceedingly neatly, when I could have done with a bit more angst. After all, if you're going to have elements of gothic in your book, then you oughta have a bit of angst.
Still. A very fun book to pick me up out of a rather longstanding reading slump.
