The Valley of the Lost by Emily Rodda

5.0

Star Rating: 5 stars

Note: This is the 7th book in the Deltora Quest series as well as book 7 in the overarching Deltora universe so this will not be an in-depth review.

When I was a child, my mother bought me a box set of the Deltora Quest series from my class’s book order, and I spent a lot of childhood reading all 8 books over and over. Later, I realized there was two companion series, but I could never get my hands-on copies to read. However, I decided to buy them recently from a used-books website and have been re-reading the Deltora Quest in order to read the companion series for the 1st time, and I recently re-read book 7, The Valley of the Lost.

One of the best things about this book is the character development that Leif goes through over this book. When the series starts, Leif is a naïve teenager that hates that he is being forced to go on this epic quest to collect the lost gems of the Belt of Deltora. By this point in the series, Leif had been so much that his beliefs are starting to change, especially once they arrived in the Valley of the Lost and realize who the Guardian and his subjects actually were. He is slowly becoming the ruler and leader that he is destined to be.

This book has multiple complex allusions, but my favorite is the one that concern the city of Tora. Tora is described as a city craved whole from a mountain of marble and being perfectly preserved after being abandoned by its residents after they broke their vows to aid the king. When I was reading the descriptions of Tora, I was reminded of other “lost” civilizations such as Atlantis, El Dorado, and it also had a lot of similarities in descriptions and how it fell with the city of Minas Tirith in the Lord of the Rings. Their punishment also closely resembles ones for the Bible.

All in all, this was a great installment in the series, especially as it starts to bring all the different pieces together and some of the important world-building events start to make sense. 5 stars!!!!!!
