This was an incredibly moving and captivating book. I don't think I'll be able to get Nuri and Afra out of my head any time soon. I loved the way the flashbacks were presented and weaved throughout the book with a connecting word to give us insight into Nuri's thought process/PTSD. The characters' stories were heartbreaking and I loved that she told the stories of refugees from different parts of the world who have made different, but ultimately similar journeys.
The author said that she “wanted to set forth the idea that among profound, unspeakable loss, humans can still find love and light—and see one another.”  and she did just that. This book was so beautiful and I have dozens of quotes I want to add to this review, but I'll just settle for a few.
“It's amazing, the way we love people from the day we are born, the way we hold on, as if we are holding on to life itself.”
“Sometimes I think that if I keep walking, I will find some light, but I know that I can walk to the other side of the world and there will still be darkness. It's not like the darkness of the night, which also has white light from the stars, from the moon. This darkness is inside me and has nothing to do with the outside world.”
