It was a little difficult to get into this book. The first stories were not my favorite and I found how the poetry in-between distracted from the pace of stories. But there are some real gems in here, stories that resonate and sucked me right back into this community.
After reading the notes at the end, I feel more convinced that not all of these stories were as finely polished as they might have been given more time. The repetition of words or even revisiting descriptions at times gives this a first draft kind of feel; I could imagine sections or sentences being crossed out later on review of a later draft. This makes it all the more interesting because it becomes a view of what stories in progress look like, how an author cultivates and prunes away.
