Perelandra
by C.S. Lewis
What a staggering book. The second book in C.S. Lewis's Space Trilogy is better than the first (though I enjoyed Out of the Silent Planet, too), as he replays the greats cosmic tragedy of our world over again on Perelandra—or can it be averted? Can a mere, fallen man save a world from the devil himself? Like a lot of Lewis's fiction, it takes a while to get into the meat of the book. Once you're in the thick of it, though—wow. An insane blend of science fiction, fantasy, and deep theological allegory, Perelandra tackles some of the hardest and most central questions in the Christian religion, while still supplying a riveting plot and fantastic prose. It is also absolutely terrifying at times and surprisingly violent, which may surprise readers who know Lewis for The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe (for surely, if you've read the rest of The Chronicles of Narnia, you know that Lewis can get dark and does so effectively).
I can't believe more people haven't read this book! It's exceptional. Do yourself a favor and read this one (and the others in the series, too!).
