Somebody I Used to Know: A Memoir by Wendy Mitchell

4.5

This gives a very insightful look into the mind of a person living with dementia. It was both emotional and inspiring. Wendy is such a force when it comes to adapting to her new reality after her diagnosis and finding ways to work around the difficulties that come with it.

I would recommend this to everyone. A big part of this memoir is creating discourse on the common misconseptions surrounding what a person with dementia looks like. Bringing awareness to the realities of this disease is very important, especially through the knowledge of a person actually experiencing it. Having a parent who shares Wendy's diagnosis of early-onset Alzheimer's, I recognized a lot of what she was talking about, but I also learned a lot. I'm greatful for now having a deeper understanding of what goes on inside their mind and will definitely be picking up her second book.
