Ducks: Two Years in the Oil Sands
by Kate Beaton
dark
emotional
funny
reflective
sad
tense
slow-paced
Wow. Just wow!
There's something so powerful about seeing Kate Beaton's art style, that I have long since come to associate with lighthearted comedy, used to render all these stark scenes from a frequently-grim point in her life. It's told here so frankly and yet with great nuance. Almost cried with relief when I got to the author bio and saw "lives in Cape Breton with her family." Well, thank fuck! "If only empathy was reciprocal" hits like a freight train. Do read the content warnings for this one.
