Guardian's Blood by Lexie Winston

3.0

First half of this book was basically erotica, which I didn't mind, but whew, quite the difference from the first book in the series. We're still getting huge lecture blurbs in the dialogue, and same with word vomiting from Jessamina when she's unhappy about something. It's not really realistic in a heated argument for someone to calmly spew out a 6 sentence paragraph of reasoning. Latter half still has a ton of smut, but there's more active plot and problem solving than the first half.

One of my significant issues is that I didn't really like how Sam developed as a character in the book. I was hoping he was actually a true asshole at this point so there would be some huge reveal and we could get it over with, but unfortunately, it turns out that
SpoilerConstance has siren-like abilities from an experiment by her Archangel father and was mind-controlling Sam to be shitty to Mina and the rest of the team. The scene where he figures out what's happening and getting blessed by the goddess was also incredibly cheesy - it didn't fit in very well with the rest of the plot.

We also get some POV from the other characters, including Constance, which was kind of an odd choice unless we plan on having her redeem herself at some point. I hate seeing villain POVs and knowing the crappy things they are planning for our heroes. :(

Once we learned who Mina's mother was, it really wasn't hard to guess who her dad was... Saving it for a big reveal in the last few pages wasn't terribly exciting.

Lastly, Mina really turned into a huge Mary Sue with OP powers by the end of the book with new powers springing up constantly. The ending was very unsatisfactory with her TSTL behavior even with all these superpowers.

I enjoyed the overall action and the smut scenes, but I don't think that the writing and plot development was very cohesive. The cliffhanger ending with Mina
Spoilerknocked out YET AGAIN wasn't very original
, but it is what it is. I still plan on reading the next book when it comes out just to satisfy my curiosity and read the smut.

P.S. Why does the cover show Collector's Division, but every reference in the book is Collectors Division? Which one is right?
