I'm still trying to understand how I can enjoy a book so much while disliking the main character so much. Carrie Ryan's zombie-apocalypse novel is so engaging and realistic - it gave me actual nightmares.
Mary, however, is one of the least likable main characters I have ever come across. She is selfish, headstrong, and has little or no regard for others. She doesn't ever seem to appreciate the sacrifices that other people make for her - it's like she can't see anything other than the ocean. I understand that seeing the ocean is a whole metaphor for hope and belief in the impossible, but I think that the people that you are surrounded by are just as important. They are her support system, although she never acknowledges that she needs anyone other than herself.
The world that Ryan has created is realistic, almost hauntingly so. She creates an island of control in the middle of a sea of chaos. I was terrified. I think that the world-building in the novel is my favorite part! I love dytopians, I think you all have heard me say that to no end. I just really enjoy the differences that an author can create with potential futures for our world.
Overall, I was very impressed with this novel. I would have loved it even more if I like Mary at all...
My rating - 3.5 out of 5, just because I found Mary to be so... off-putting.
