POV: cis hetero male.
Did not like the characters, I'm not sure if the reader is supposed to sympathize, mostly, with Sammie, the narrator. But she is an unreliable narrator (potential alcoholic?). Samson seems like he's intentionally only developed as a character in certain ways. It sounds like he may have been neurodivergent, dealing with depression, but none of this dealt with. It's seems like just a lesbian mom who doesn't try to understand or better help her male child. I think the reader can almost feel for him more at certain times. As another review states, he's presented almost as this rapist in the making or developing sociopath that in a matter of time will do other bad things.
I know plenty of people don't actually try to improve themselves by being honest with themselves and others. Sammie just reeks of this type of person.
The pacing and the story felt a bit clunky. I liked the alternative POVs from some of side characters like the coach and Megan.
Overall it was a mediocre story. I suppose I would suggest it for those looking for a more melancholic lgbtq+ novel.
