Ruthless Vows by Rebecca Ross

3.5

I debated on what I actually wanted to rate this for over a week and decided it deserves a 4 because of the writing.
However; the flow/pacing/prose whatever you want to call it was so off in this book for me in comparison to the first one.
I adored the first book immensely and totally fell in love with the romance, world building, and the mystery that was Oath. However; the ending just left me feeling that something bigger/deeper was missing.
There are things that happen where I know I should be emotionally invested but I wasn't, the ending was well written but flat. I'm not even sure if that makes sense to anyone but myself but there it is. There were side characters and dynamics/plot developments that I thought should have been fleshed out more to make the story more impactful and it felt like a giant missed opportunity. It felt like she was building up all these other story lines that just *poof*. I wonder where some of the characters even ended up...which is why I almost gave it a 3.

Overall I loved the first book and was meh on the second book but would still recommend this to an entry level fantasy reader that just wants a nice quick duology instead of a long drawn out series.
I have been told by others that a river enchanted (her other duology) may be more along the line of my style and because I loved her writing so much I do plan to read those but I'm not in a "I must read this author" feeling after book two.
